Experience & Background

Hi, I’m Greg Strouse, BME, MA.Ed.— a lifelong percussionist and music educator with 35+ years of experience helping students of all ages and experience levels develop confidence, creativity, percussion skills, and a love for music. My journey began in 4th grade with a pair of drumsticks and turned into a lifelong mission to teach, perform, and inspire.I’ve taught over 4,000 students (all ages) during my career— from beginners to professionals— through private lessons, group instruction, masterclasses, clinics, university classes, and more. I’ve served on the adjunct Music faculty at Morehead State University, Asbury University, and Transylvania University, authored and taught the percussion curricula for numerous school band programs, and conducted percussion ensembles at every academic level. My students have gone on to : All-State, All-American, KY Governor's School of the Arts, Honor Bands, College Music Scholarships, DCI and WGI Finalists, US Military bands, Professional Performing & Teaching Careers, and more.I hold Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education (with a K–12 music teaching certification), taught percussion at multiple Universities, High schools, and Middle schools, and currently serve as the Executive Director and Chief Instructor at Strouse Percussion Studio. I have traveled and performed across the U.S., Europe, China, Brazil, and Canada — with a wide variety of groups including professional concert bands, symphony orchestras, theatre productions, rock & jazz bands, historical reenactment groups, and more. I was also honored to be a member of the Legendary DCI World Champion Bayonne Bridgemen Drumline.My primary teachers and mentors have included: Professor Frank Oddis (MSU), Johnny Roy, Dennis DeLucia (DCI Hall of Fame), Pat Petrillo, Peggy Stephens, Rick Mattingly, Bob Hilton, Ralph "Skip" Frank, Larry Keenan, & Jay Flippin.I have also received individual coaching and/or attended masterclasses & educational events with artists including: Vic Firth, Leigh Howard Stevens, Chalo Eduardo, Marty Hurley, Gregg Bissonette, Fred Sanford, Luis Conte, Roy Burns, Glen Velez, Tom Freer, Bobby Sanabria, Raul Rekow & Karl Perazzo (Santana), Dave Weckl, Michael Spiro, Gordon Stout, Brad Dutz, and many more.My Professional membership affiliations include the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and more.In my non-music endeavors, I was the former Director of the Learning Skills Program at both Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky where I taught the Master Student Class and coached individual students on academic success and study skills .I was also a corporate trainer and consultant (Strouse & Associates) to a wide variety of businesses, professional associations, and government organizations on the topics of learning, memory, and productivity.I am a former Karate instructor and competitor and a certified Tai Chi Instructor. I have studied multiple martial arts styles and I am a Black Belt member of Chuck Norris's United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF).Most importantly, I’m passionate about creating positive, customized, and engaging learning experiences that help every student grow musically and personally.
